Tom Wilson reflected on his Olympic fight with France’s Pierre Crinon, saying he felt compelled to defend a teammate after a dirty hit despite knowing the risks of ejection.

Tom Wilson found himself in no man's land this weekend.

The NHL star, the star of Team Canada knew that dropping the gloves with France's Pierre Crinon could get him kicked out of Olympic contention, just as he did with the Frenchman himself.

The two players scuffled seven minutes into the game, which Canada won 10-2.Both players were ejected from the game under Olympic rules, but the French Hockey Federation went one step further and suspended Crinon for the rest of the Games.

Washington Capitals' Wilson appeared to be looking to make amends for teammate Nathan MacKinnon's early-game hit, but it was clear Crinon wanted to take it to the next level, as Wilson, the NHL's active leader in penalty minutes, was held back somewhat, but not completely.

"It was a dirty hit, and in the Olympics it's a little different that you have to go about it. Of course I ended up with the same guy who did it," Wilson told the New York Post.

"Hockey is an emotional game. It's a competitive game. And when you meet a big guy, you've got to have a plan quickly and the gloves are off. He went into a frenzy, and from there, it's just a little bit of a fight. I mean, it's fight or flight at that point, you're just thinking about what you've got to do in the game. With five minutes of potential for me to do.

TEAM USA WOMEN'S HOCKEY is locked in Sweden, advancing to the gold medal game at the Winter Olympics.

The French Ice Hockey Federation found Crinon's behavior inconsistent with its values and announced that he would no longer play for them at the Olympics.France ended their run on the ice with a 5-1 loss to Germany in the play-off qualifiers on Tuesday.

"Pierre Crinon's provocative behavior in leaving the ice, even though he had just been ejected from the game for fighting, is a clear violation of the Olympic spirit and also undermines the values of our sport," the French Ice Hockey Federation (FFHG) said via Reuters.
