2026 will mark a historic period of free agency in the WNBA.

After months of uncertainty that we would even have a WNBA season, free agency is finally here.It will be an unprecedented free agency period, both in terms of the available free agents and the cashing out of their salaries.

After months of negotiations between the WNBA and the WNBPA, the league and the players' union have reached an agreement on a new collective bargaining agreement set for the next seven years.Under the new CBA, the WNBA's salary cap will increase from $1.5 million to $7 million — meaning the league's spending in free agency will reach an all-time high.

The first breaking news about the WNBA free hit on Monday, when the Chicago Sky traded All-Star Angel Reese to the Atlanta Dream. The Sky received the Dream's first-round picks from 2027 and 2028, while the Dream received Reese and the right to trade a second-round pick with the Sky in the 2028 WNBA Draft.

As for the players, there's no shortage of elite star power in free agency — although how many will be "available" to negotiate as they try the free market.

Liberty made a major qualifying offer to Ionescu on Tuesday — a fully guaranteed, one-year supermax deal worth $1.4 million under the new CBA.The Minnesota Lynx also made a special offer to star Napheesa Collier before the deadline.

Most of the league's vets are smartly tying up their contracts to become free agents in 2026, meaning the talent pool is deep and most teams' lineups could be very different this year, especially in the wake of the Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire expansion drafts.

The Angels Reese trade saw the return of Chicago Sky history

The Chicago Sky brass and Angel Reese themselves could say whatever they wanted to bounce around the issue this offseason.A deal has seemed imminent for months, and anyone reeling from that aspect of Monday morning's news is obtuse at best.

That doesn't mean the turmoil has had any less of an impact on Sky, a franchise that has been mired in controversy and drama since it was thrust into the spotlight as host of the All-Star Game this summer. And now they are left without their superstar, but are faced with yet another sticky rebuilding situation.

The Dream acquired two-time All-Star Angel Reese in a trade with the Sky.

In her first two seasons in the WNBA, Angel Reese made the All-Star team twice and earned MVP votes as a rookie. But that didn't stop the Chicago Sky from parting ways with the former LSU star.

Reyes, 23, was traded to the Atlanta Dream on Monday, the team confirmed.

The Sky reportedly traded Reese and a second-round pick to Atlanta in 2028, and the Sky reportedly received the Dream's first-round picks in both 2027 and 2028 in exchange for Reese, according to FOS' Annie Costabile.

After entering the WNBA, Reese played like an elite player. She averaged 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds per game, made the All-Star Game, and finished second in Rookie of the Year voting and MVP voting.
