VERT.BAY – Green Bay Packers defensive line coach and running game coordinator DeMarcus Covington will interview for the defensive coordinator position in Dallas.
According to multiple reports, Covington will interview with the Cowboys after the season for the coordinator job that opened up when they fired Matt Eberflus.
He is interviewing at least 10 candidates, including Cowboys Denver passing game coordinator and former Wisconsin defensive coordinator Jim Leonard and former Eagles offensive coordinator Christian Parker, a former Packers assistant.
Covinton joined the Dodgers in February and spent eight seasons with the New England Patriots, including one (2024) as defensive coordinator.He coached linebackers and defensive backs with the Patriots.
General manager Brian Gutekunst and defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley praised Covington's work on the defensive line.In addition to getting rookies Warren Brinson and Nazir Stackhouse ready to play, veterans Devonte Wyatt and Colby Wooden had the best years of their careers.
The Packers are 18th in the NFL in passing defense and 12th in yards allowed.The Baltimore Ravens dominated the Packers in their season-ending loss, but the Packers played strongly against the Chicago Bears in their final two games.
The Packers may be looking for a defensive coordinator soon.Hefley has received interest from five teams for the head coaching job, and the Packers should know if he'll continue in a week or two.
Coach Matt LaFleur's situation will also play a role in determining whether the Packers need a new defensive coordinator.If LaFleur is not retained, there may be an opening.
If LaFleur stays and Hafley leaves, Covington could be named defensive coordinator.
