Louisville handles Syracuse, but Michael Brown Jr.Absence of

- Louisville basketball led Syracuse for 34 minutes and as many as 24 points en route to a 77-62 victory in the final game at the KFC Yum!Center of the 2025-26 season.

- Ryan Conwell, J'Vonne Headley and Isaac McKneely combined for 58 points in 13 minutes, 3 seconds for the Cardinals.

- UofL, however, is without guard Mikel Brown Jr.due to spinal cord injury.Estimates of the availability of NBA lottery results will be much higher.

Louisville basketball fans who came to the KFC Yum!Center for Tuesday night's regular season finale we were treated to everything from Khani Rooths and Sananda Fru connecting for an alley-oop to Isaac McKneely converting a 4-point play after being tied by Syracuse's Tyler Betsey as his shot from the left wing hit nothing but net.

They even saw Ryan Conwell, who grew up going to games at 1 Arena Plaza with his 502 relatives, kiss the Dunking Cardinal in the middle of Denny Crum Court as he finished the game (à la Chucky Hepburn), and coach Pat Kelsey ran into the student section after the final buzzer.

However, they didn't get one last chance to talk to Mikel Brown Jr. The freshman point guard became the first player in the program to get the hang of it before running the show. The projected NBA draft pick suffered a back injury in UofL's 77-62 win over the Orange — the same reason he missed eight games between Dec. 16 and Jan. 17.

Louisville (21-9, 10-7 ACC) took care of business without Brown, snapping a two-game losing streak by holding Syracuse (15-15, 6-11) to 34 minutes and 24 points, which bodes well for Saturday's regular-season finale in Miami. But the star freshman's readiness will be an issue moving forward.

On Monday, Kelsey said Brown's body was "a little beat up" from a hard fall in the Feb. 23 loss at No. 19 North Carolina.Brown scored just five points on 2-of-10 shooting in 21 minutes off the bench in last weekend's loss at Clemson after being demoted from a probable decision to a game-time decision."He definitely wasn't 100 percent today," Kelsey said after the loss.

"We'll see how he is in training today," the coach told reporters on Monday."The doctors are making this decision regarding his fitness to play ... and then we'll see how he is tomorrow."

The question is: Does Brown need to sit out Saturday's Quad 1A road game to ensure he'll be 100% for next week's ACC Tournament? With Tuesday's win, the Cards defeated N.C.State.in sixth place in the conference standings through the tiebreaker. But they could also find themselves as the No. 7 seed at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, depending on how the last day of the regular season goes.

And there's the question: What if Brown misses Saturday's game and the ACC Tournament to ensure he's 100% eligible for March Madness?

Kelsey said Brown "probably" attended Monday in other locations but did not."He wanted to play tonight," the coach said."(I was) like, 'Mikel, we need you 100%. Let's get better; let's get him right.'

"... When he's 100%, man. You've seen it; he's special. He hasn't been 100% in those last couple (games). He's put it out there - wanting to be available for his teammates - but we need him 100%. We'll see how we approach that process in Miami next week and as the days go by."

If Brown isn't 100 percent on Saturday, and if he isn't 100 percent in UofL's first game of the ACC Tournament (most likely next Wednesday), Kelsey will need more than he got against Syracuse on Tuesday night. But remember: Louisville should look sharp against sub-.500 teams in league play — and they were outscored 41-38 at the half.Two.

That didn't matter in the end because of the Cardinals' defensive intensity during the first 20 minutes, when they held the Orange to 21 points on 7-of-25 shooting (0-of-11 from 3) and forced seven turnovers, and their renewed offensive connection that lasted most of the night.

“The last few days, all we've done is space and defend,” J'Vonne Hadley said.“That’s it.”

"... We took it a little bit personal, because it was our last home game," the sixth-year captain said.

It's fitting, then, that three UofL players who exhausted their eligibility at the end of the season combined to score 58 points: Conwell (23), Hadley (19) and McKneely (16).Together, they hit 13 of the team's 14 made 3s, all of which were needed on a night when the Cards went 5 for 17 on layups against one of the best shot blocking squads in the country.

"We knew we wanted to win back," said McKneely, who went 5 of 11 from deep after going 2 of his last 12 on Tuesday. "We needed to win."

Louisville also dished out 17 assists on 27 baskets and had just nine turnovers, its fewest since a Jan. 17 win at Pittsburgh. He did so despite opening the game with four field goals over the opening 2:49 -- a "comedy of errors," Kelsey said.

"The last 30 minutes of the game, they played every 2-3 zone," said the coach."I don't want to say it's fool's gold when it comes to moving the ball; but, when someone plays in the field, there's no other option. I think it worries us a little bit - because, when someone plays in the field, you have to pass, the ball moves, you go in, you're going to hit or move (you have to).

Louisville and Miami are scheduled for a 2 p.m.tip Saturday at the Watsco Center. The Hurricanes, led by first-year coach Jai Lucas, head to SMU on Wednesday ranked third in the ACC standings and 30th in the NET.

UofL will look to bounce back from its disappointing 3-7 road record when it travels to Coral Gables, Florida.Six of those losses came at the hands of Quad 1A opponents.

“We understand this is a big game,” Kelsey said."(It's) a great opportunity against a team that is very good and playing very, very well. I'm excited to get to work."

If Brown gets back to 100% before the offer, that will be easier, but it's only a matter of time.

"He's one of the better college guards I've seen in a long time," Syracuse coach Adrian Autry said.
