As for TV, the Braves are reported to be able to go it alone.
Earlier on Monday, we received word that the Atlanta Braves are one of three teams (along with the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Angels) that have not decided to follow the Brewers, Cardinals, Rays, Reds and Royals from MLB Media regarding their TV games.
The Braves want to start their own television network, according to a report
Bahadur is said to be able to go it alone when it comes to TV.
Well, now we know why the Braves didn't join that group of ballclubs in making that leap.It turns out the Braves are reportedly looking to launch their own television network.Tom Friend of Sports Business Journal reports that this is the path the Braves will take.He explained it very clearly in his article, detailing what the Braves and eight other clubs plan to do in the upcoming telecast.
...The Braves are expected to launch their own network, possibly to air on national streaming platforms like Amazon or Apple or with a template similar to the Rangers Sports Network — which has direct-to-distributor deals with cable and satellite providers, local over-the-air partners and streaming channels in Victory+.
Here's a link to the Rangers Sports Network programming page if you're interested. The way it works for them is that the Texas Rangers have their own platforms where they can reach fans via cable and/or satellite, over the air and even broadcast.Cable/satellite and OTA options will be available to fans in the entire Braves TV market (which is basically most of the entire Southeast region of the US) and the streaming option is the market. It also gives outside fans a chance to watch the team — and in Atlanta's case, Amazon Prime and Apple TV options would be very attractive.
The Braves were already available to watch locally via streaming platforms on Amazon Prime if you chose to purchase a FanDuel Sports Network subscription through that platform for $19.99 per month.I imagine if this is what the Braves are doing, they would just switch to that platform and stay on Amazon Prime, so I can't expect this to be much of a change for fans who were already watching the Braves through streaming platforms.
However, this would be a huge change from a television standpoint, as it would be a new frontier for the Braves in terms of television. They've been part of the RSN model since their days of nationwide cable distribution via TBS Superstation (the good old days) and now the team has clearly decided that the future will include their own production and distribution of their products.
Either way, it's clear the Braves will be out of the RSN TV business if they go down this path. There's still no guarantee that Braves will find a permanent television home, but so far, we're closer than ever. We'll see what happens!
Update [3:52 p.m.]: The Braves released a statement regarding the following:
The Atlanta Braves know the story of Main Street Sports Group. While we are disappointed with this development, we are strongly preparing for this outcome and are well on track to begin a new season in Braves media.
In Braves Country and beyond, we have one of the largest and most dedicated fan bases in sports, as well as one of the widest television regions, and we're excited to bring Braves baseball to our fans in new ways.
We want to assure our fans that we are ready for the 2026 season and will broadcast all Atlanta Braves games throughout Braves Country. We look forward to sharing our journey with you in the coming weeks.
