Art Briles has returned to college football as the head coach at the Division II school in eastern New Mexico.
Blries, 69, has not coached at the university since 2015, when he was fired amid school corruption. He spent the last 4 years as the head coach in Astra Guelel, a team in the Italian professional football league.
"We are excited to welcome the arts to the New Medico East side," athletic director Kevin Fite said in a statement."He is a great coach and I look forward to the future of Greyhound football."
The league went 99-65 in 13 seasons decorating Houston and Baylor, including three back-to-back titles.Brile is known as an elite player, and his offense has recorded two shutouts in the last four seasons.
Briles was fired in May 2016 after an internal Baylor review questioned his role in failing to disclose a series of allegations of sexual misconduct against players. The school's athletic director Ian McCaw and president Kenneth Starr also resigned because of the scandal.
The Canadian Football League's Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2017 and Grambling State in 2022 both announced they had hired Briles as offensive coordinator, but reversed the move days after widespread public backlash.Briles coached with Estra Guelfi in 2018 and then returned to the Texas high school ranks — where he had made a name for himself before joining Mike Leach's Texas Tech team in 2000 — for two seasons before returning to Italy after the Grambling job fell through.
In 2023, Briles was found not negligent by a federal judge in a case involving a Baylor student who accused the football player of sexually assaulting him.He later received a $15.1 million settlement from Baylor.
"I understand that I did some things, unfortunately," Byle Bringe said in a 2015 interview with ASPN.
From 2003-07, Briles was Houston's associate athletic director for qualifying and qualifying under head coaching.
