ORLANDO, Fla. — The Red Sox made the most significant move of the offseason Thursday night, landing starter Johan Oviedo in a five-player trade that sent Justinton Garcia to Pittsburgh.Craig Breslow's winter began with Oviedo and Sonny Gray, and the Red Sox still have big needs — including the impact of the bat, which is possible as the winter meetings begin in Orlando in the coming days.
Breslow took time Friday to answer a few questions via email about the Oviedo business and more. Some answers have been lightly edited for clarity.
1. Obviously, Johan Oviedo is a man who seems to have great generosity, but he does not have a great record in the big leagues. What do you think about him and what do you expect with him when you get him in the "sound lab?"
We see Johan is the one who started to break last year until the end of the year.Presenting a unique and unique character from TJ (Tommy John). It has the ability to beat boys and Berbaba Berbas Which is a good place to start when considering a Starter Repertoire.
Of course, he hasn't summarized it all in the form of one dominant season yet, but that doesn't mean he can't or won't do it.We've seen enough to recognize that he has plenty of raw material, and at 27 years old, development is on the horizon.
2. You said earlier in the winter that you wouldn't spend "a lot of time" adding an arm that can't penetrate directly behind Garrett Crochet after the Sonny Gray deal.Is this just a unique opportunity not to be missed? Is he talking about Oviedo's ceiling?
This is a good time to add the three-to-up to the passengers to be angry with the team and proceed to the deep and closing deep.We hope this makes us better and we have a lot of talent where we want to achieve.
3. Heading to the Winter Meetings, are you still looking to add a spin?Is a front-end guy still a possibility at this point? How would you describe your predecessors as they stand?
Our priorities must be clear on how we can do this in 2026 and we must take advantage of the fact that we need many small players.
4. Justinson Garcia is clearly the man the fans got to know last year and the one the club has gravitated towards. What was the decision to move him and to what extent did your surplus on the pitch play a role in that?
Justinkson is a good player who had a breakout season last year and has a really interesting package of tools. However, we were really excited about the return, feel good about the depth of the outfield we have here, and believe Justinkson will go on to have a successful major league career. He's a good player and an even better kid who works hard.
5. Can you walk us through the other two players under contract, Taylor Samaniago and Adonis G Girlsday, and what you got into them?
Samaniego is someone we believe can help us move forward. He has deep chemistry with left-handed hitters and consistently hits them at a high level. He also has a fastball (good enough) to hold up against (righties). Its fundamentals and performance are strong and we are excited about its continued development.
GZMMAN is what we want to be like Ammateur with a strong profile, good decisions and chocolate that we can grow to grow.
6.. Do you plan to have a personal meeting with a free agent on the website or website while in Florida?
We will wait to announce any intentions in Orlando, except to acknowledge that it is always an unpredictable environment.
