Will Muschamp is returning to SEC defenses and returning to Texas, where his coaching career first began.
Texas announced Thursday that it fired defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski and hired Muschamp, who worked as an analyst with Georgia.
Muschamp is committed to Georgia through 2021.– first as a defensive analyst before working on the field for the next two seasons.Muschamp vs. 2024was demoted to a quality control role during the season, in part to spend more time watching his son, Whit Muschamp, at quarterback at Vanderbilt.Muschamp has been around the Georgia building, inside and out.While he appears, his role has diminished over the past year.
Texas, meanwhile, went from best in the SEC to fifth this year.The Longhorns were preseason favorites to win the SEC, but went 9-3 and missed the College Football Playoff.
“Everybody in the building loves Will Muschamp,” Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann said last year before CFP."Obviously, there are things in his life and his family's life that he wanted to leave in some way. But he's active, I mean, even when he's not here, he's involved in discussions.
Kwiatkowski has been Texas' defensive coordinator since 2021. The Longhorns typically have a stout defense, but coach Steve Sarkisian opted for a change, with Muschamp's availability a bonus.
Muschamp was one of the rising stars in the college coaching world when Texas hired him from Auburn University.The Longhorns ultimately named Muschamp head coach-in-waiting.However, with head coach Mack Brown showing no signs of retiring, Muschamp resigned as Florida's head coach before the 2011 season to replace Urban Meyer.
Muschamp's head coaching career has not gone well;he was fired in his fourth season at Florida, then missed five seasons at South Carolina.Still, his teams' defenses haven't typically been a problem, and he's been highly regarded for his contributions at Georgia over the past few years.
